At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 individuals died in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Government representatives stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by various security forces comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
