Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
