The child of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror accusations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of Durban city.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she made on digital networks in the past during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her dad.
A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, left at least 300 individuals deceased and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and is charged with allegations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the previous president's apprehension for defying a legal directive to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of graft while he was in power.
The defendant has repeatedly denied the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously calling the prosecution's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her dad after he started his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A small number of backers from her party, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her father and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.
The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the judge in what is expected to be a closely watched legal battle with significant political consequences for South Africa.
