As a client comes to counselling sessions, they typically appear calm and set to start their session. Yet having worked with clients for some time, I recognize what's really happening lies underneath a composed exterior.

This individual explains that the previous night, they served themselves "a single drink" to decompress post a stressful day. A single drink became two, followed by even more. That's a pattern they have become accustomed to; a private custom that helps them "switch off" away from the overwhelming thoughts that overwhelm their mind once the day ultimately comes to an end.

Growing Trend: Turning to Substances to Cope With Stress

This story represents something that I have been noticing at a growing rate during sessions. As a therapist, I have noticed a notable pattern: a growing amount of adults who turning to alcohol to cope with their stress.

Data reveals that about over a third of people who drank alcohol admitted doing so to alleviate stress and 18.5% to handle nervousness.

Recognizing Global Distress Exposure

We navigate a time of what psychologists call worldwide anxiety factors. Rarely have we been so frequently informed of crisis, tensions and uncertainty.
