Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
The newly public communications showed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it respected Summers' choice to resign.
"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on this week to approve a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his base.
A group of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.
The emails indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to introduce Summers to influential global figures.
After the messages were released with the wider community, the former official said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with the financier".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Following his announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in DC where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
He entered the board of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive the company leader.
