During the bulk of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Spoiler Warning: This article details significant events for the concluding episodes.
After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern was that very thief.
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
