The Numbers Indicating The Manchester City Star Will Easily Claim the Premier League Top Scorer Award

Erling Haaland in action
Erling Haaland is experiencing a highly prolific beginning of the campaign

After netting nine goals in his opening seven fixtures, Pep Guardiola's attacker Erling Haaland has begun the season in spectacular form.

Even though this doesn't represent his most impressive beginning to a season - he scored 11 goals in his first seven games in two seasons ago and double digits last year - it still puts him with a three-goal lead in the early running for this term's Premier League Golden Boot.

What makes this none of his nine goals have been spot-kicks renders it particularly impressive.

Haaland's Distinct Advantage

Naturally, injury could definitively intervene in the final top scorer outcome, but there are two primary explanations why Haaland is such a strong favourite for the prize so soon in the campaign.

To begin with, the quantity of strikes he has already scored - and, equally significant, the quantity and caliber of opportunities he's receiving.

Secondly, the sluggish beginning his usual rivals for the prize have made.

Chance Quality Assessment

A footballer's xG statistic (xG) represents how many goals a Premier League player has historically scored from the total and standard of opportunities he's received.

It is not a number randomly picked by statistical experts, but by English top-flight records.

When examining at attackers' xG statistics in the English top division so far this campaign from regular situations, the Scandinavian attacker is obtaining considerably more excellent scoring situations to find the net than anyone else.

Actually, even if Haaland didn't excel at finishing chances than every other footballer in the league, he would still have scored over double the amount goals as the remainder of the league.

Chance Creation Breakdown

This is shown by analyzing the number and quality of scoring situations that attackers have encountered in the English first division so far.

Haaland has taken 29 shots so far this campaign, a dozen more than all other attackers.

That is actually not particularly unusual for him - he had in fact attempted more non-penalty shots at this point in the previous two campaigns (30 in 2023-24 and 34 in the 2024-25 campaign).

What is, however exceptional even for Haaland is the quality of chances he has had this term. His shots have had an chance quality metric of 0.27 per attempt.

This statistic indicates is that footballers have traditionally scored the efforts he's registered at a 27% success ratio.

Among footballers attempting at minimum ten attempts, only Stamford Bridge player Enzo Fernandez has had more straightforward opportunities to convert per attempt - because of a few simple finishes against the Hammers and Seagulls.

City striker's xG statistic of 0.27 is considerably superior than the 0.17 xG rating per effort he had at the start of last season.

In short, the chances he has had in 2025-26 have been notably easier to convert from in a restructured Manchester City side than those at the beginning of last season.

Past Performance Analysis

Starting a season so strongly is, as mentioned above, not unusual for Haaland. After seven games last term he had registered ten strikes - four additional compared to anyone else and half-dozen more than Mohamed Salah.

Yet it was the Reds attacker who claimed the top scorer award with twenty-nine strikes, seven more than the Manchester City striker.

This season, while Haaland has opened with incredible momentum, Salah has registered half as many goals and had half the scoring situations (xG) than at this stage last season.

Actually this has been the least productive beginning to a Premier League term the Pharaohs star has made.

Competitors' Modest Opening

It's not merely Salah who has begun modestly either. When examining at the top 11 scorers in the Premier League last term, Haaland has netted the same number goals as the other 10 players put together so far.

Whether because of injuries - several key attackers - protracted transfer stories in a specific forward's circumstances or just due to the fact that their sides have underperformed (several proven attackers), Haaland's likely rivals in the contest for the top scorer award have not fired so far.

European Top Scorer Competition

Even as Haaland seems the distinct favorite for the Premier League scoring title, what about the European top scorer prize that is given to the player with the most goals in Europe's top-five leagues?

That competition is considerably more open at this early stage because Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe have similarly opened in superb fashion, with 11 and 9 conversions each.

The fact Haaland has scored so many times and has the highest xG of the three players despite not attempting any penalties renders him the favourite.

But since Kane and Mbappe are among the finest finishers in European soccer in terms of overperforming their xG, the battle continues intensely.
